Background

The Leconfield Project was established in 1998 and formally constituted in September 2000 with the object of seeking to improve the quality of life for the residents in the area by organising activities and establishing a community building which would be the focus for the community and to allow an increased and wider range of activities to take place. Currently, the only available meeting space is ‘St Peter’s Church’ hall which is not suitable for the kind of activities which are envisaged because it is an open plan, working church. Since 2000, various activities and events have been organised and a number of public meetings have been held and surveys carried out to research the principle of building a community room. The initial survey showed that 92% of those who responded were in favour of the proposal; further surveys and questionnaires also supported the idea and indicated the type of activities that were wanted by local residents.

The Project Group has attracted the support of several other voluntary and statutory organisations which recognise and endorse the need for a local centre which would allow community activities, classes, advice and information sessions to take place.

These include Age Concern; Adur Council for Voluntary Service; West Sussex Adult Services; Adur District Council; The Pension Service; Lancing Citizens Advice Bureau and Sussex Police.

An area of land, a disused garage site owned by Adur District Council, was identified as a potential site for a community building. The Council has granted a twenty-eight year lease at a peppercorn rent and a small grant was obtained to enable plans for a building to be drawn up.

Revised plans have been passed by Adur Council. A copy of these can be viewed at their planning offices or by contacting the Chair of the Project.
